Documentary work from concept through completion
On the final weekend of August 2008 over 200 bicycle couriers, alleycat racers, track bike enthusiasts, cargo bikers and bicycle polo players descended on Chicago for the North American Cycle Courier Championship. The NACCC, as it's called, is one of the three premier cycle messenger races in the world. The event travels from host city to host city each year and 2008 was Chicago's first hosting opportunity.
Disconnected Media's resident photographer and graphic designer Chris Dilts was tapped by the organizers early on to help produce the promotional materials for the event, including posters, flyers, t-shirts and the rider guide - an 18-page booklet providing comprehensive information about both the event and the city of Chicago to global group of competitors.
Tapping into a wealth of photography from several years of documenting the Chicago messenger and urban cycling scene Chris was able to quickly assemble materials which raised the bar of professionalism for the event and caught notice of local media such as Time Out Chicago and the Chicago Sun Times daily youth oriented paper Red Eye.
At the opening party for the event Chris photographed a series of portraits of participants, organizers and volunteers for COG Magazine, a cutting edge urban cycling publication based out of Milwaukee Wisconsin. The portraits were featured in COG's Fall 2008 issue and were also the subject of a gallery show in Chicago.
Following the success of the magazine piece and the show the images were collected into a single volume, Delivery, and published in the Spring of 2009.
